Sonics On Their Way Out

As previously speculated, the Oklahoma City-based owners of the Seattle SuperSonics intend to move the team to OakCity.

Since the drive-in food chain Sonic is also based in OkC, we can only hope the uniforms will be changed to give them more of a double-bacon cheeseburger look and taste.

Unless something changes, this will be the third major professional sports team to depart Seattle, after the MLB Seattle Pilots left town after one season in 1969 and the Pacific Coast Hockey Assoc. Seattle Metropolitans folded in 1924 after 10 seasons (and one Stanley Cup win (1917), one Stanley Cup loss (1920), and one Stanley Cup Finals cancelled due to Spanish Flu (1919)).

Seattle is a cool city and a good sports town, but being that I'm a Golden State Warriors fan, I'll get over the move in about five minutes. Or less, apparently. It appears as though already I don't care.

Oklahoma City Sonics: It rolls off the tongue like they've been around forever.

It doesn't roll as nicely as New Orleans/Oklahoma City Hornets. Jason - please tell me (because I'd be highly impressed) that your sports knowledge is so good that you knew off the top of your head about the hockey team? First, it's hockey. Second, it's Seattle. Third, it was the 1910's. How could you have known that without looking it up?

I looked it up. I needed the year for the Seattle Pilots and I saw the Metropolitans blurb too.

I do know a bit about hockey franchises moving to and fro, but only from 1970 forward.

The Colorado Rockies were a hockey franchise????

And when did Atlanta (the hockey team) leave?

The Atlanta Flames moved to Calgary I believe in the mid 80s. It had to be before '88 when the Flames won the Cup. I can't believe I blew Minnesota moving to Dallas. And where did the Colorado Rockies go?

The Rockies became the New Jersey Devils in the late 70's or early 80's. 1982 stands out for some reason.

Before they were the Rockies they were the K.C. Scouts for a few years. That was in the WHA days.
