CNN and Yahoo News are reporting that syndicated columnist Bob Novak has died at age 78.
Many people will remember Novak from his columns or from his long tenure as host of CNN’s Crossfire, but I’ll always think of him as the #1 Terps fan in the country.
Novak not only sat courtside at every home game (along with some other old dudes), but he also worked his schedule around the team and travelled on the team plane to most away games.
He was no fair-weather fan, as he started following the Terps in 1969 (Lefty’s first season) and held season tickets from 1971 on. After Maryland won the 2002 National Championship, Gary and Novak celebrated back at the hotel together.
There’s even a section in Johnny Holliday’s book on Terps basketball about him. Also, check out this interview CSTV did with Novak about his love for Maryland basketball.
Whatever you think of Novak’s politics, he was a true die-hard Terps fan, and he will be sorely missed.

I followed his columns and "Crossfire" but I had no idea what a hoops junkie the guy was.
R.I.P., Mr. Novak
