Great early Derby preview over at some random fantasy baseball blog. I guess we're getting close enough to start talking about betting rules for the Kentucky Derby. My big one is to always bet distance horses. Anyone who's tired at 9 furlongs (or even worse, hasn't run at a mile or more) is immediately scratched off my racing form. We'll have more Derby coverage as it gets closer to the first Sunday in May. What are your ironclad rules for Kentucky Derby betting?

1) If there is a runaway favorite, ignore him. There are too many horses and too little resume for any horse to be a significant favorite.
2) If you really like a middler or underdog, bet him hard to win and show and forget all the exotics.
3) Make sure War Emblem is actually in your exacta before you start acting like you won $1300.
4) Fusaichi Pegasus is the only two-words-each-with-three-syllables horse to win a Triple Crown race. Never forget that while betting.
5) The word "War" appears in the name of four Preakness winners.
By the way, the race is offically now called "The Kentucky Derby Brought to You by Yum! Brands". Seriously.
