Illini top OSU

Ron Zook has done a fantastic job in Champaign, Illinois this year, but he might want to rethink this quote:

"I'm so happy for the Illini Nation right now."

You can't really use that term WHEN YOUR TEAM IS NAMED AFTER A DECIMATED NATIVE AMERICAN GROUP.

Oh, no no no. You're wrong. It was named for an Indian tribe until the NCAA decided it wasn't. So Illini just means people from Illinois.

I thought that was the Utes, or Semenholes.

The Seminoles won their fight with the NCAA. Not sure about the Utes.

I believe Illinois did away with the mascot Illiniwek as a peace offering to the NCAAs. I think they got to keep the name Fightin Illini because people from Illinois are Illini.

As always, I don't bother with fact checking, so I may be off a bit.

I wish I could find the story on how Utah got to keep their athletic logo (a U with a feather on it) and William and Mary had to get rid of theirs (a WM with a feather on it). The logos look almost identical, but apparently Utah's was OK and WM's wasn't.

I assume the reason had to do with approval from the respective tribes.
