The Dolphins did St. Louis and Atlanta a huge favor today in announcing that they have reached terms with Michigan OT Jake Long. Both teams can field offers now with one variable removed from the equation.
Then again, the Dolphins wanted to trade down and couldn't find any takers. It's unlikely the Rams and Falcons will find any either.

I wish they had pulled a "modified-Vikings" move: Intentionally pass on the first pick, and then pick third, taking whoever was still left of Long, Long, and Dorsey, getting one of those three guys with a reduced signing bonus. This is a very Parcells move though, and I absolutely cannot imagine that a Tackle will be getting the same $50-$60m deals that Manning, Smith, and Russell have gotten lately. At least I sure as heck hope not.
Yeah, I agree that taking an OT is Parcells way of reducing the hit. I'm surprised more teams haven't made the Vikings move. I am still anticipating that there will be a Mexican Standoff one year, despite Brien's argument last draft that no GM would take the PR hit.
or maybe Parcells just wanted to build a foundation by taking a franchise left tackle
Just saw the terms...5 years $57.5 million, $30 million guaranteed. Wow. So he did get Eli Manning/JaMarcus Russell money afterall.
I don't disagree with the pick. The Dolphins have a ton of holes and they reportedly did try to trade down. They just named a former OL coach as their head coach. Why not play to the strengths when they have so many pieces to find anyway?
I do think Parcells and Condon should have found a way to keep it under wraps until Friday night or Saturday morning.
I think after JaMarcus' holdout they're just happy to already have a contract in place. If it's clear to them that no one is going to trade with them, what's the point in waiting to announce? The Rams already have Orlando Pace, and the Falcons... they have so many holes to fill it's ridiculous, so neither team was holding its breath for Jake.
Why give the Rams the de facto #1 pick and four days to shop it? There are only 32 teams in the league. There's no reason to throw any of them a bone when you don't have to.
